Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons meringue powder
  • Water, as needed for icing
  • Food coloring, for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream butter and sugar until smooth.
  4. Add egg and vanilla, then mix well.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing until combined.
  6. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Cut out heart shapes and place them on a baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes until edges are golden.
  9. Let cookies cool completely before decorating.
  10. For royal icing, mix powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water until smooth.
  11. Divide icing into bowls and add food coloring as desired.
  12. Decorate cooled cookies with icing and let them dry completely.
