Ingredients

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar

  • 3 to 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
  3. In another bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth.
  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla.
  5. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients.
  6. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls, and place them onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  7. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven.
  8. Cool on wire racks.
  9. For the royal icing, beat together powdered sugar, egg whites, and cream of tartar until smooth.
  10. Decorate cookies with royal icing.
