Description
A traditional dish for New Year’s Day, believed to bring good luck.
Ingredients

- 1 cup dried black-eyed peas
- 4 cups water
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 smoked ham hock
- Salt to taste
- Black pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- Rinse black-eyed peas and soak them overnight.
- In a pot, heat olive oil over medium heat.
- Add onion and garlic, sauté until soft.
- Drain peas and add to the pot with water and ham hock.
- Season with salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour.
- Remove ham hock, shred meat, and return to pot.
- Serve hot.
Notes
- Soaking peas reduces cooking time.
- Adjust spices to your taste.
- Serve with cornbread for a complete meal.
