A guide to preparing and presenting a Thanksgiving turkey.

- 1 whole turkey (12–14 pounds)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons salt
- 1 tablespoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon dried thyme
- 1 tablespoon dried rosemary
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 1 onion, quartered
- 2 carrots, chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C).
- Remove the turkey giblets and pat the turkey dry.
- Rub the turkey with butter, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, and rosemary.
- Place the onion, carrots, and celery inside the turkey cavity.
- Place the turkey breast-side up on a roasting rack in a pan.
- Pour chicken broth into the pan.
- Roast the turkey for about 13-15 minutes per pound.
- Baste the turkey every 30 minutes.
- Check the internal temperature; it should reach 165°F (75°C).
- Let the turkey rest for 20-30 minutes before carving.
Notes
- Use a meat thermometer for accuracy.
- Let the turkey come to room temperature before cooking.
- Save the carcass for making soup.
