Description

Traditional Sri Lankan New Year food featuring a variety of dishes.


Ingredients

  • Rice – 2 cups
  • Jackfruit – 1 cup
  • Jaggery – 1 cup
  • Coconut milk – 1 cup
  • Green gram – 1 cup
  • Cashews – 1/2 cup
  • Raisins – 1/2 cup
  • Ginger – 1 tsp
  • Cardamom – 1 tsp
  • Salt – to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash the rice and soak it for 30 minutes.
  2. Cook the rice in a pot with water until soft.
  3. In a separate pot, boil green gram until tender.
  4. Add jaggery and coconut milk to a pan and heat until melted.
  5. Combine the cooked rice, green gram, and melted jaggery mixture.
  6. Add chopped jackfruit, cashews, raisins, ginger, and cardamom.
  7. Mix everything well and cook for another 10 minutes.
  8. Serve warm.

Notes

  • This dish is commonly prepared during the Sri Lankan New Year.
  • You can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less jaggery.
  • Feel free to add more dried fruits or nuts as desired.
