Description

A rich and creamy sausage gravy made from breakfast sausage, flour, and milk, perfect for serving over biscuits or toast.

Ingredients

  • Breakfast sausage: 1 pound (450 grams)
  • All-purpose flour: 1/4 cup (30 grams)
  • Milk: 2 cups (480 milliliters)
  • Black pepper: 1 teaspoon (or to taste)
  • Salt: 1/2 teaspoon (or to taste)
  • Cayenne pepper: A pinch (optional)
  • Red pepper flakes: To taste (optional)
  • Onion powder: 1 teaspoon (optional)
  • Garlic powder: 1 teaspoon (optional)
  • Fresh herbs: Chopped parsley or thyme (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and crumble the breakfast sausage into the pan. Cook for 5-7 minutes until browned and fully cooked.
  2. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour over the cooked sausage and stir well. Cook for 1-2 minutes while stirring constantly.
  3. Gradually pour in 2 cups of milk while continuously stirring until the mixture is smooth and begins to thicken (about 5-7 minutes).
  4. Add 1 teaspoon of black pepper and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  5. Remove from heat and serve over freshly baked biscuits or toast.

Notes

  • Ensure the sausage is fully cooked and browned.
  • Do not skip the roux step for a smooth gravy.
  • Add milk gradually to prevent lumps.
  • Start with recommended seasoning amounts and adjust as needed.
  • If the gravy is too thick, add a splash of milk; if too thin, let it simmer longer.
