Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour: 4 cups (500 grams)
  • Water: 1 ½ cups (360 milliliters), warm (about 110°F or 43°C)
  • Active dry yeast: 2 teaspoons (7 grams)
  • Salt: 1 ½ teaspoons (9 grams)
  • Sugar: 1 tablespoon (12 grams)

Instructions

  1. Gather all your ingredients in one place.
  2. Activate the yeast by combining warm water and sugar, then sprinkle yeast over it and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour and salt, then add the yeast mixture and stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Shape the dough into a ball, place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough, shape it into a round loaf, and place it on a baking sheet or in a greased pan.
  7. Cover the shaped dough and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C), make slashes on top of the dough, and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
