Ingredients

- Granulated sugar: 1 cup (200 g)
- Egg: 1 large
- Vanilla extract: 1 teaspoon (5 ml)
- Buttermilk: 1/2 cup (120 ml)
- Red food coloring: 1 tablespoon (or to desired color)
- Powdered sugar: for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare your kitchen with all necessary tools.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter-sugar mixture and mix well. In a separate bowl, mix the buttermilk and red food coloring, then add to the butter mixture.
- Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined.
- Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, drop rounded balls of dough onto a prepared baking sheet and gently flatten each ball slightly to form a heart shape.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, until the edges are set but the centers are still soft. Allow to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
- Once cooled, dust with powdered sugar before serving.
