Description

A rich chocolate cake filled with cream cheese and topped with chocolate cream cheese buttercream.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  3. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  5. Stir in boiling water until well combined.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pans.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes.
  8. Let cakes cool for 10 minutes in pans, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.
  9. In a bowl, beat cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth.
  10. Spread cream cheese mixture between the layers of cake.
  11. In another bowl, beat butter and cocoa powder until smooth.
  12. Add powdered sugar and milk. Beat until creamy.
  13. Frost the top and sides of the cake with chocolate cream cheese buttercream.

Notes

  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator.
  • Let the cake sit for a few hours for flavors to meld.
