Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  3. In a bowl, mix flour, baking soda, spices, and salt.
  4. In another bowl, cream butter and brown sugar until fluffy.
  5. Add molasses and eggs, mix well.
  6. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture.
  7. Stir in hot water until smooth.
  8. Pour batter into the prepared pan.
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  10. Let the cake cool before frosting.

Notes

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container.
  • Frosting can be made ahead of time.
  • For a spicier cake, add more ginger or cinnamon.
