Description
A classic apple pie recipe that combines sweet and tart apples with warm spices in a flaky crust, perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
- Pie crust: 2 (one for the bottom and one for the lattice top)
- Apples: 6 cups, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 6-8 medium apples; a mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp works well)
- Sugar: 3/4 cup (adjust based on the sweetness of apples)
- Brown sugar: 1/4 cup
- Ground cinnamon: 1 teaspoon
- Ground nutmeg: 1/4 teaspoon
- Lemon juice: 1 tablespoon (freshly squeezed)
- Butter: 2 tablespoons, cut into small pieces
- Egg: 1 (for egg wash)
- Milk: 1 tablespoon (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Prepare the pie crust by rolling it out and placing it in a 9-inch pie pan.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine sliced apples with sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Let sit for 10-15 minutes.
- Pour the apple filling into the prepared pie crust and dot with butter. Create a lattice top with the second pie crust.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Brush the lattice top with an egg wash and bake for 15 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 35-45 minutes.
- Let the pie cool on a wire rack for at least 2 hours before serving.
Notes
- Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for the best flavor.
- Allow the filling to sit to prevent a watery pie.
- Cover edges with aluminum foil if they brown too quickly.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
